Last week I saw the MDNA Tour in DC. It was a blast and reinforced my enduring fascination with Madonna. I openly admit to liking her and always have. Except that one time, when she did a show in a Long Island, NY club just before she became famous. It was 1983 when I saw her up on stage singing Burning Up. I wasn’t impressed and it was close to curfew, so I went home. In all, I have seen her live 3 times over the last 29 years and suspect that I will probably still be interested in her ten years from now.
What did I carry in my purse to the shows, you ask?
Well, you didn’t ask, but I got to thinking about this as I was loading my purse for this last show.
Boy Toy, have times changed.
1983 Escapes Nightclub – Long Island, New York
My LeSportsac handbag was stuffed with:
- Hair pick to keep the curls looking 80′s big.
- Mascara, blush, lip gloss, Maybelline eyebrow pencil
- Parliament Cigarettes
- Matches – not only to light my cigarettes but also to light the end of my Maybelline eyebrow pencil so when I put it along the inside rim of my lower eyelid, it went on smooth and black.
- Key to my car, because I always remembered to push the button down to lock it.
- $11.00 – for the cover charge plus two Whiskey Sours
- Dime for the payphone – just in case

I have been missing out–a am a pocket kind of gal—great vehicle for this write–loved how you linked these
I always have way too much paraphernalia to fit just in the pockets. I am sure the next Madonna concert I go to, I will be taking along one of those rolling suitcases!
You crack me up!
A+ for remembering what you had with you each time, F- for that fanny pack though…..
First of all, you were probably only5 when I was sporting the fanny pack. Had you been able to get one of your own, I am sure you would have been transporting all your Barbie stuff around the neighborhood with it. Jealousy doesn’t become you.
I am just a little evnvious you got to see Madona live.
She isn’t coming “Down under” any time soon
My Barbie would never have been seen in a fanny pack! LOL – Love your wit my friend
